Welcome at the website of Department of Environmental Microbiology and Biotechnology (Drewniak & Dziewit research group) of the Faculty of Biology, University of Warsaw! We are working in several fields of microbiology, including: environmental microbiology; microbial biotechnology and bioremediation; microbial genomics and metagenomics; bioinformatics.
We specialize in: molecular and physiological analyses of extremophilic bacteria (with special focus on cold-active and metallotolerant bacteria); the biology of mobile genetic elements of bacteria; environmental virology; antibiotics and heavy metals resistance, metabolism and transformation; the development of novel biotechnologies using microorganisms (e.g. in biogas production and bioremediation).
Przemyslaw Decewicz received Bekker Fellowship for his 1-year post-doc in Prof. Robert Edwards group at Flinders University in Australia. Congrats!!!

Our project PhageLand “Phage treatment and wetland technology as intervention strategy to prevent dissemination of antibiotic resistance in surface waters” received funding. It will be coordinated by C. Borrego (Catalan Institute for Water Research, Spain) and includes collaborators from University of Warsaw (L. Dziewit), Warsaw University of Life Sciences (M. Grzesiuk-Bieniek), KU Leuven (R. Lavigne), Quadram Institute Bioscience (E. Adriaenssens), Delft University of Technology (D. Weissbrodt) and Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy (A. Ferdohleb).

We received two OPUS projects:
Project “Role of extracellular DNA, generated during communal wastes treatment, in dissemination of virulence and antibiotic resistance genes in aquatic ecosystems”. Lukasz Dziewit is a coordinator of the consortium which includes research groups from AGH University of Science and Technology (T. Bajda) and Warsaw University of Life Sciences (M. Grzesiuk-Bieniek).
Project “Benchmarking Human Tissue Culture Systems that Mimic the Tumor Microenvironment” coordinated by M. Nees from Medical University of Lublin. Tomasz Kaminski is a partner in this project along with the research group from Institute of Physical Chemistry, Polish Academy of Sciences (M. Tabaka).
